Search your main keyword on Google. Above the blue links, an AI Overview answers the question and cites a handful of sources. Is your site one of them?

That box now decides a lot of clicks. In Pew Research Center's study, users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. You can hold position three and still lose the click to the sites Google chose to cite.

Your rank tracker can't see this. An AI Overview tracker can. It runs your keywords or prompts through Google's AI answers on a schedule and records whether an answer appeared, which sites it cited and where yours sat. The best Google AI Overview trackers cover AI Mode too.

Below are the 6 AI Overview tracking tools worth your shortlist, compared on price, AI Mode coverage, cadence, seats and data access. If you want a quick look before you pay, two free AI Overview checkers are at the end.

Free AI Overview checkers

A tracker earns its price once you need history. For a first look, a free checker will do.

  • Firemark AI Overview and AI Mode Checker: enter your domain and up to 5 keywords to see whether Google returned an AI Overview or AI Mode answer, whether it linked to you and which domains it cited instead. It checks the US on desktop, with no account. Try the free checker.
  • SEO.com AI Overview Checker: shows which of your top keywords trigger an AI Overview and the URLs those answers mention. It gives a few free checks a day, asks for an email and covers AI Overviews only.

Both are snapshots. AI answers change from day to day, so only repeated runs show whether you are gaining ground.

How to choose an AI Overview tracker

  • You want Google's AI answers and ChatGPT at a published price: Firemark Lite at $29, moving to Starter for daily data.
  • You already pay for Semrush or SE Ranking: start with their AI add-on if the per-domain and per-seat costs work for you.
  • You run an agency with many people and brands: look for unlimited seats and brands. Firemark has both from Starter.
  • You need Perplexity on the entry plan: Omnia.
  • You want content written too: Topify.
  • If you also track ChatGPT, read how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT.

AI Overview tracker FAQ

Can you track Google AI Overviews for free?

You can check them for free. Firemark's checker covers 5 keywords with no account, and SEO.com allows a few checks a day. Tracking over time needs a paid plan. Firemark's starts at $29 a month.

What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode tracking?

AI Overviews appear at the top of normal Google results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational Google page with its own answers and sources. A tracker that covers both shows if you're cited in either.

Do normal rank trackers show AI Overview citations?

Most report only whether an AI Overview appeared. Some, such as SE Ranking, now record cited URLs as well. Dedicated AI visibility trackers also record which brands the answer names and which it links.

How often should an AI Overview tracker run?

Weekly is enough to spot direction. AI answers vary from run to run, so a trend over several runs tells you more than any single check, and daily helps when you are testing changes to a page.

Does appearing in an AI Overview mean you were cited?

No. An answer can name your brand without linking to your site. Firemark counts named and linked separately, so you can see the difference.
