Measure AI visibility

What Is AI Visibility? A Plain Definition for Marketers

AI visibility is how often AI assistants name your brand when buyers ask questions, with links counted separately. The definition, the four outcomes it counts, how it differs from SEO and what it leaves out.

Three stats and four outcomes defining AI visibility: a 95% range of 12% to 77% on 2 of 5 answers, 8% vs 15% clicks, and 1 in 100
On this page

The short answer to "what is AI visibility" is a count over a base: so many AI answers named your brand out of so many answers collected, with links to your site tracked alongside. The category is whatever buyers ask about, and the assistants are whichever ones they ask. A figure with no base behind it tells you almost nothing.

Key takeaways

  • AI visibility is the share of AI answers that name your brand, out of the answers collected, with links counted separately.
  • Named and linked are two different outcomes, which gives four possible results per answer.
  • A run is a sample, so the base matters as much as the percentage.
  • It doesn't measure clicks, sales or whether an answer is accurate.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants and AI search features name your brand, and whether they link your site, when people ask questions in your category. It's usually measured by asking a fixed set of prompts on several engines on a schedule, then recording who is named, who is linked and how that changes. The same measure also goes by AI search visibility.

A prompt is the question a buyer types, like "best invoicing software for a five-person agency". An engine is the assistant or AI search feature that answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode. Firemark asks ChatGPT in its web app, logged out, from a US location and in English.

Keep the questions the same on every run. If you reword them between runs, you can't tell whether your AI visibility changed or the wording did. A different question gets a different answer, so a shift in your numbers could come from the question and not from anything you did. Change the list and you start a new comparison, not a longer trend line.

What are the parts of AI visibility?

AI visibility has two parts, counted separately: whether the answer names your brand and whether its sources link your site. Together they give four outcomes.

Four cards: named and linked, named, linked but not named, and absent, the four outcomes an AI answer can have for a brand
The four outcomes an AI answer can have for a brand
Named and linkedBrand named in the answer text: Yes. Your site in the answer's sources: Yes
NamedBrand named in the answer text: Yes. Your site in the answer's sources: No
Linked but not namedBrand named in the answer text: No. Your site in the answer's sources: Yes
AbsentBrand named in the answer text: No. Your site in the answer's sources: No

Absent is the easiest row to skip in a report.

In Firemark's scoring, a name that appears only inside a list of sources doesn't count as named, and a link alone never counts as a mention. Other tools use labels such as mention and citation for a similar split, with definitions that vary, so check which one a report counts.

What is the AI visibility formula?

Your share is the answers that name you divided by the answers collected, for one engine or for all of them. Linked answers get their own figure the same way.

Formula card: 40 answers that name you, divided by 100 answers collected, equals a 40% share

If 40 of 100 answers name you, your share is 40%. The 100 matters as much as the 40, because 2 named answers out of 5 carry a 95% range of about 12% to 77%.

How is AI visibility different from SEO?

SEO reports a position for a keyword on a results page, while AI visibility reports whether a brand appears in an answer that has no fixed list order. The two overlap in the work behind them, and they differ in what they count.

According to Google's guidance for site owners, the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional technical requirements to be eligible as a supporting link. Google counts those impressions in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, and since mid-2026 also shows them in a separate Generative AI performance report.

One reason to count the answer itself is clicks. In a Pew Research Center analysis of 900 US adults' Google visits in March 2025, people clicked a traditional search result link in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary and 15% of visits that didn't. Pew re-ran the searches afterward to see which pages had a summary, so the comparison shows a pattern, not a cause.

Rank position also carries less meaning in an AI answer.

In a study by SparkToro and Gumshoe, an AI tracking vendor that SparkToro's post discloses, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through each tool under their own default settings. The chance of the same list of brands twice in 100 asks was under 1 in 100 on ChatGPT or Google's AI, and the same order almost never came up. SparkToro's author concluded that a visibility percentage across dozens to hundreds of prompts, run multiple times, is probably a reasonable metric, while saying more data is needed and that real prompts vary far more than the study's.

How do you measure AI visibility?

You measure AI visibility by asking the same prompts on the same engines on a schedule, then counting the answers that name you, and separately those that link you, out of all the answers collected. The base is prompts times engines, so 100 prompts on 4 engines is up to 400 answers per run.

Every run is a sample, because engines don't give the same answer every time, and a small basket moves more than a large one. At a 40% share on one engine, the 95% range, which covers answer sampling only, is 23% to 59% on 25 prompts and 36% to 44% on 500, using the figures on Firemark's method page. That's arithmetic on one engine's base, not data from a real brand.

Firemark shows a percentage only from 20 prompts up, and it reports a movement only after three comparable runs and a change of 5 points or more. Those are one tool's rules of thumb, not a significance test, and at a small basket a 5-point move can still be sampling noise.

What is a good AI visibility score?

No single AI visibility score is good everywhere, because a share depends on your prompts, your market and who you compete with. Read your share against your rivals' and across several runs.

SparkToro found Bose, Sony, Sennheiser and Apple in 55% to 77% of 994 answers to headphone prompts, and Gumshoe's analysis showed top headphone brands often at 90% to 100%. For a brand design agency prompt, the same analysis put the highest visibility in the 30s and 40s. SparkToro's data suggests the number of options in a space may shape how often any one brand appears more than its relative prominence does.

A single blended score reads well on a slide, but it hides the base. Report the share together with the answers behind it.

What does AI visibility leave out?

AI visibility counts what AI answers say about your brand, not what people do next or whether an answer is right. Four gaps matter most, and the last two describe how Firemark collects answers, so other tools differ:

  • Clicks, visits and sales that follow an answer. The data records the answer, and what a reader does next sits outside it.
  • Accuracy. Named, linked, position and sentiment are recorded. Whether a sentence about you is true is a separate check.
  • Signed-in answers. A person with history can get a different answer than a logged-out session.
  • Other countries and languages. Firemark asks from the United States, in English.

A fixed basket is also a proxy. Another phrasing of a prompt can get another answer, and real buyers phrase questions far more variously than any basket does, so nobody should treat one ask as a verdict. A demo report shows what a run looks like, using sample data.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI visibility the same as AI share of voice?

AI share of voice, in Firemark's usage, applies the same count to every brand you track, the answers that name each brand out of the answers collected, and ranks you among them by that count, not by where a name sits inside an answer. Other tools may define it differently, so check the definition before comparing two reports.

Is a mention the same as a link?

A mention and a link are different outcomes in AI visibility. A mention means the brand's name appears in the answer text, and a link means the answer's sources include your site. An answer can have one without the other.

How often should you measure AI visibility?

Firemark runs daily, weekly or monthly, up to a plan's fastest cadence, so pick one you can keep. A single run is a sample, and Firemark calls a movement only after three comparable runs.

Can Search Console show AI visibility?

Search Console shows part of it: its Generative AI performance report shows impressions, pages, countries and devices for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and it covers Google only. It doesn't report whether ChatGPT or Perplexity names a brand.

Find out if AI names your brand

AI visibility starts with one question: when buyers ask AI about your category, are you in the answer? Firemark asks that on a schedule across up to five engines, depending on the plan, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI, and counts the answers, so the base sits behind every figure. Open the demo report to see a run, or start with a small set of prompts.
